Burley Fisher Books are pleased to present No Shrubs, an exhibition of botanically-themed prints by artist Grizelda Kitching. In these recent works, she explores bright and bold natural forms, based on photographs taken at Peckham Rye and the Barbican conservatory in London as well as the exotic climes of Barbados, Mexico and Colombia.

The stark shadows and textures of plants in the sun, in particular palm fronds, are a recurring theme. Drawn to this botanical imagery, she responds through colourful mark making. Using screen prints of her own drawings or photographs as a base, she chooses to disrupt the images through altering scales and gestural brush marks. This overlay of patterns produces the final abstract compositions.

In Kitching’s prints, the natural subjects rub against her use of digital processes, while spontaneous daubs of paint and colourful monoprint impressions add expressive elements. Kitching’s combination of printmaking and painting allows for serendipitous variations to permeate the work, making for multivalent, painterly and highly individual images.
