She trained in theatre in Utrecht and taught at the Writers’ Academy in Amsterdam. She made her debut as a children’s book author in 1990 with \u003ci style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003eThe Lady and the Rhinoceros\u003c\/i\u003e, which won the Woutertje Pieterse Prize, a major Dutch award for new children’s literature. Vegter’s first poetry collection, \u003ci style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003eHet veerde\u003c\/i\u003e, appeared in 1991, followed in 1994 by \u003ci style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003eOngekuiste versies\u003c\/i\u003e, a book of erotic tales. Since then, she has published widely across genres. Vegter regularly works as a performer, collaborating with composers and musicians. Her work has been translated into English, German, Spanish and French. She has received numerous awards for children’s literature, theatre and poetry, including the Woutertje Pieterse Prize, the \u003c\/span\u003eAwater\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\"\u003e Poetry Prize (2011), the Anna Blaman Prize, and the Ida Gerhardt Poetry Prize. This collection, originally published in Dutch in 2020 as \u003ci style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003eBig Data\u003c\/i\u003e, was awarded the Ida Gerhardt Poetry Prize for best collection. Vegter’s work is characterised by an elastic style that is playful, erotic, enigmatic and disturbing. She has published three collections of poetry in Dutch: \u003cem\u003eKameleon \u003c\/em\u003e(2015), which was awarded the Herman de Coninck debut prize for poetry by a Flemish author; \u003cem\u003eNachtroer \u003c\/em\u003e(2017), nominated for the VSB Poetry Prize 2018 and the Ida Gerhard Prize; and \u003cem\u003eAarduitwrijvingen \u003c\/em\u003e(2021). The first two volumes are combined in \u003cem\u003eChameleon \u003c\/em\u003e| \u003cem\u003eNachtroer\u003c\/em\u003e, published by Bloodaxe in 2020. David Colmer's translation of \u003cem\u003eAarduitwrijvingen \u003c\/em\u003eis published by Bloodaxe in 2025 under the title \u003cem\u003eThe Inside of a Stone\u003c\/em\u003e.
