A winter evening of poetry from writer-editors John Freeman, Gboyega Odubanjo, Rachael Allen, Jack Underwood and Jason Allen-Paisant to break up the long January. Come warm yourselves up with poems, books and conversation.

Rachael Allen is the author of Kingdomland (Faber) and co-author of numerous artists' books, including Nights of Poor Sleep (Prototype), Almost One, Say Again! (Slimvolume), Green at an Angle (Kestle Barton) and Material (Loose Joints). She teaches Creative Writing at Queen Mary University, is the poetry editor for Granta Books, and her second collection of poems is forthcoming in 2024.

John Freeman is the editor of Freeman’s, a literary annual of new writing, and executive editor at Alfred A. Knopf. His books include How to Read a Novelist and Dictionary of the Undoing, as well as Tales of Two Americas, an anthology about income inequality in America, and Tales of Two Planets, an anthology of new writing about inequality and the climate crisis globally. He is also the author of three poetry collections, Maps, The Park and Wind, Trees, published in fall 2022.

Gboyega Odubanjo is a British-Nigerian poet born and raised in East London. In 2018 he completed an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of two poetry pamphlets, While I Yet Live (Bad Betty Press, 2019) and Aunty Uncle Poems (The Poetry Business, 2021). In 2021, he was also one of the poets featured in the Runaways London anthology (IS&T Press). Gboyega is an editor of bath magg.

Jack Underwood is a poet, writer and critic. He is the author of Happiness (Faber 2015) Solo for Mascha Voice (Test Centre, 2018) and A Year in the New Life (Faber 2021). His debut work of non-fiction, NOT EVEN THIS, was published by Corsair in 2021, exploring parallels between quantum physics, black hole science, cyborgism, and the philosophies of language and knowledge and poetics, all through the lens of new parenthood. He has collaborated widely with composers and artists, and his work has been published internationally and in translation. He is co-presenter and curator of the Faber Poetry Podcast and is a senior lecturer in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths College, and is currently working on a collection of short fiction.

Jason Allen-Paisant is a Jamaican poet and academic who works as a senior lecturer in Critical Theory and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester. He’s the author of two poetry collections, Thinking with Trees, winner of the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for poetry, and Self-Portrait as Othello, a Poetry Book Society Choice for spring 2023. His non-fiction book Scanning the Bush will be published by Hutchinson Heinemann in 2024, and his monograph Engagements with Aimé Césaire, which examines relationships between poetry and politics from the perspective of African metaphysics, is due from Oxford University Press in 2024.
