REGENERATE: A series of workshops for emerging writers

Thanks to a grant from the Bookseller’s Association’s Diversity Fund, we are thrilled to announce a series of free writing workshops at the shop for the local community, beginning in January 2019.

REGENERATE is a free writing and publishing workshop for previously unpublished fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry writers who are over 18, and living, working or studying in E8. It will be held at Burley Fisher Books, a wheelchair-accessible venue, over 3 months, with six workshops taking place every other Monday evening.

REGENERATE is designed in recognition of the social and economic barriers to becoming a published writer in the UK, and of the under-heard voices needed on bookshelves. While, as a bookstore, we encourage and support all writers and readers, for REGENERATE we specifically invite emerging writers who have not had the opportunity to study writing, emerging writers on low incomes or in precarious work, emerging writers who are carers, and emerging writers from under-represented communities including BAME writers, LGBTQI+ writers, disabled writers, and refugee writers.

We are able to offer small bursaries to support 2-3 workshop participants’ travel, childcare or access needs.

REGENERATE will bring together social justice and science fiction to engage writers in imagining the regeneration against gentrification of E8, through an engagement with the area’s geography, history, social composition, ecology and politics. Imagining otherwise, workshop participants will gain practical writing and editing skills using tools from science fictional conceptions of writing and world-building applied widely across their preferred genres, in order to share a conversation about how writing can shape and make personal and political change, and to prepare their work for reading and publication.

The workshops will be facilitated by So Mayer, and will include the opportunity to work with three visiting writers. This workshop round will focus on poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. We will not be able to support playwrights or screenwriters.

To be eligible for the programme, you must be available to attend on the following dates in 2019, with workshops starting at 7pm:
