"This is guaranteed to be unlike any other book event you have been to before!" - Hewson Books about our last performance.
Mike’s life has become directionless and when he walks out of a marriage in freefall, he has nothing left to lose. He’s headed to Gritstone House, a closed community in the Calder Valley dominated by the galvanic personality of his long- time friend Al. He’s been invited to Al’s wedding but stays to see the community implode in hysterical violence – and a group of well-meaning people become murderers
Saxophonist and writer Alan Newcombe reads from his debut novel. He will then be joined by his musician friends for a set of improvised music incorporating words from the book.
The group is: Bettina Schroeder and Iris Colomb aka The Gritstone Schwestern – desiccated readings. Douglas Benford, Chris Hill and Alan Newcombe – keyboards, strings, percussion, wind instruments.
Gritstone is available on the night for a reduced price of £10
This will probably be our last performance of Gritstone!!
Alan Newcombe grew up in post-war London with Canadian and English parents. He witnessed the transition from the drab 1950’s’ in a city littered with bombsites, to the seismic burst of colour in the late 60’s. His own memories of that era feed into the stories of his characters in his debut novel Gritstone. Alan’s writing encompasses a fascination with people’s shared history and family heritage—but also concealment, the limits of friendship, and the experience of living outside any law. Gritstone is set in the Calder Valley, an area Alan has known and visited for many years. The landscape lends itself to the Gothic undertow in the novel.
