The tales, chronologically arranged, have been freshly edited, in most cases from the final printed form approved by their author, and include his own MS. re-visions. There are explanatory notes throughout, a guide to further reading, and an introduction which analyses at length the deeper implications of these particular tales, places them in their contemporary European and American contexts, and describes their importance in the development of modern literature.’
